Holiday Weekend

On this day in 1835, James Gordon Bennett Senior published the first issue of the New York Herald. This is a largely uninteresting fact, I’ll grant you, but it does lead to the life of James Gordon Bennett Junior, his son. Junior followed his beloved daddy as editor of the Herald and it was he who backed Stanley’s expedition to Africa to find Dr Livingston (or so I presume.) Something of a celebrity hedonist, Junior lived the good life, though he served in the navy in the civil war and won the first trans-oceanic boat race in 1866. The expression of shock and outrage ‘GORDON BENNETT’ however is his greatest legacy. According to the legend, he arrived at a high class social event at his fiancée’s family mansion late and very drunk and urinated in the fireplace. So this event should be commemorated really.

Anyway, not much to say for myself today other than why on Earth is it always bright sunshine and blue sky for days leading up to a holiday weekend and then grey and miserable for the main event only to warm up and clear again just as you go back to work? Honestly?

Oh, and we’d planned a relaxing weekend this weekend after our last few busy ones and instead spent it cleaning, tidying and gardening. Chez Moosehunter (henceforth to be known as the Lodge – coz that’s where moose go to drink you know) is now much nicer and cleaner. For a day or two anyway until our two monsters get going.

And why is there never a hammer or a screwdriver when you want one?

And why will a dog eat absolutely anything (including stuff they found in their own ass) but won’t eat the most scrumptious titbit in the world if there’s a pill buried in it?

Anyway. Bye.

Work Now.
